Why SEO Is Not Dead (And Why the “Affiliate Guys” Prove It)

Every couple of years, somebody declares SEO dead. Usually it’s right after a big Google update when their rankings tank and their income disappears overnight. Cue the crying, the clickbait YouTube thumbnails, and the doomsday tweets. And yet, here we are again—SEO alive and well, just not in the same shiny package it was before.

I’ve been doing this for over a decade. I’ve ranked hundreds and hundreds of websites. Real businesses. Real leads. Real phones ringing. And I’ve noticed a fascinating trend since Google’s Helpful Content Update (HCU) rolled through like a wrecking ball: the affiliate marketing “gurus” are pivoting into local SEO. That right there is all the proof you need that SEO is far from dead—it’s just evolving, and local is more alive than ever.

When the HCU Nuked the Affiliates

The HCU wasn’t a little slap on the wrist. It was a full-on career-ender for a lot of affiliate marketers. Guys who had been making big money teaching affiliate marketing, building massive YouTube followings, and running sites full of “Best Toasters of 2022” content suddenly found themselves staring at analytics graphs that looked like ski slopes.

Google once again killed a bunch of jobs. Shocker, right? They’ve done it before and they’ll do it again. If your whole business model was built on gaming product reviews and thin content, the HCU didn’t just hurt you—it buried you.

Watching the Pivot (Without Calling Names)

Now, I’m not here to call anyone out personally. Some of these guys I actually follow and respect. But I can’t help but notice the pivot. Affiliate kings are suddenly publishing “Local SEO Guides for Contractors” and offering packages to help HVAC companies rank in their town. These are the same guys who, not long ago, were telling everyone to forget local and chase affiliate riches.

The irony is hilarious—but it’s also telling. If SEO were dead, why are these guys flooding into the local market? Why pitch plumbers, roofers, and HVAC companies if the game is supposedly over? Because local SEO is thriving. And unlike affiliate marketing, where Google can cut your legs out overnight, local SEO is built on real businesses with real demand.

Contractors Need SEO More Than Ever

Let’s get real here. Contractors and service businesses need SEO more than ever. HVAC, roofing, electrical, painting, flooring—you name it. These are industries where the phone ringing equals money in the bank. Local competition is fierce, ad costs are climbing, and being visible in search isn’t optional.

Every homeowner with a broken AC in July or a leaking roof after a storm isn’t scrolling through affiliate blogs—they’re typing “HVAC repair near me” or “roofing company in [city]” into Google. And guess what? The company that shows up in the map pack or the top three organic spots gets the call. That’s not theory. That’s how it works every single day.

SEO Isn’t Dead. It’s Evolving.

The truth is, SEO has never been static. It changes constantly. Penguin, Panda, Medic, HCU—you name the update, I’ve worked through it. Every time the talking heads scream that SEO is finished, it simply evolves.

Right now, the evolution is driven by AI. Regular SEO guys like me are already deep into AI SEO, testing, refining, and pushing forward. It doesn’t mean the fundamentals are gone—it means the tools, the strategies, and the execution are sharper. Businesses don’t care if it’s AI-driven, content-driven, or link-driven. They care if their phone rings and their schedule fills.

Why This Matters (If You’re Paying Attention)

Here’s the takeaway: the affiliate pivot proves the point. These weren’t small-time players. They were running empires off niche sites and YouTube clout. And when the bottom fell out, they didn’t run to TikTok or Instagram to become influencers—they ran to local SEO. Why? Because local SEO is stable, profitable, and essential.

That’s the big joke. The very people who used to laugh at local SEO are now teaching it, selling it, and building courses around it. Meanwhile, those of us who have been in the trenches with contractors, helping them grow real businesses for over a decade, are just nodding and carrying on.

The Mic Drop

So, is SEO dead? Not even close. If anything, the fact that affiliate gurus are now knocking on contractors’ doors proves it’s more alive than ever. Local SEO is the bedrock, and AI is just the next gear in the machine.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: SEO isn’t some hobby, side hustle, or quick-cash play. It’s about making the phone ring for real businesses. And as long as there are businesses that need customers, SEO will never die.

Mic dropped.
